paper models : scale : aggregation













one aggregation of the various scales creates a snakelike spine of modules.

combination of the spines into many layers allows for analysis of another spine to become inherent within the fabric.

AGGREGATION

I've begun to take the modules and aggregate them, once scale is involved. The scale itself starts at 1/2" units and scales upwards exponentially (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 until the 5th size of 23/16" is achieved. The scaling allows for gaps to occur while the orientation begins on a circular/ snakelike path.

diagrams of some of my paper models

all these models are based on a simple fold on a 4"x1" layout.







a unit is formed (which is one individual petal).












the petal itself is allowed movement in various ways, but once attached to two other petals, creates a module.









the module is limited in movement from the facet of the petal that attaches to the others.









as the model becomes larger, what began as a flat piece of paper begins to create a curve. this is seen in greater intensity as more and more elements are added.









each module attaches to two others to create the cluster, or flower, as a six pointed star becomes the center with petals arranging themselves around it.

paper models

My primary focus for the paper models grew out of an interest in tensile structures and curves (after having studied Frei Otto). I began with a ruleset of a 2 in by 2 in square which generated into angles and curves. By different processes of aggregation, a fabric (or skin) was developed.

The saddle curve is evident in the curve modules is derived from Otto.



















precedent study

For the precedent study, I researched Frei Otto (along with the help of Guenter Behnisch) and the Olympic Games Tent in Munich for the 1972 games. Also, understanding of tensile structures became important, as Otto is fundamental in this subject.

the first stage: patterns found within nature
-spiral
-meander
-explosion
-flow
-branching












what i want to further study:
-curvature within spirals (the giant labelia)
-branching and torque (the coral)
-and stress determined by flow (knot in wood)
